What is Panchang?
Panchang (เคชเคเฅเคเคพเคเฅเค) is the traditional Hindu Vedic almanac used for over 5,000 years. The word Panchang means "five limbs" โ Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga, and Karana. Together they determine the auspiciousness of any given moment for religious rituals, ceremonies, and daily life decisions. Hindu families consult the Panchang before scheduling weddings, naming ceremonies, housewarming rituals, travel, and business starts.
Daily Panchang Elements
- Tithi โ The lunar day, calculated from the angular distance between Sun and Moon. There are 30 Tithis in a lunar month, each governed by a specific deity.
- Nakshatra โ One of 27 (or 28) lunar mansions through which the Moon transits during its monthly cycle. Each Nakshatra has its own ruling deity, symbol, and characteristics.
- Yoga โ One of 27 combinations formed by the sum of the Sun's and Moon's longitudes. Auspicious Yogas like Siddha, Amrita, and Shubha are ideal for important activities.
- Karana โ Half a Tithi period. There are 11 Karanas repeating through the lunar month, each with specific implications for activities undertaken within it.
- Vara โ The weekday, each ruled by a specific planet (Ravi = Sun, Soma = Moon, Mangala = Mars, Budha = Mercury, Guru = Jupiter, Shukra = Venus, Shani = Saturn).
Auspicious Timings
Om Panchang calculates several important auspicious and inauspicious time windows for each day:
- Rahukalam โ An inauspicious 90-minute period ruled by Rahu. Avoid starting new ventures, signing contracts, or making important decisions during Rahukalam.
- Choghadiya โ Eight time periods through the day and night, each labeled Shubha (auspicious), Labha (beneficial), Amrit (nectar), Char (movement), Kaal (time/death), Udveg (anxiety), Rog (illness), or Vaar Vela. Use Shubha, Labha, and Amrit Choghadiya for important activities.
- Brahma Muhurta โ The pre-dawn period approximately 96 minutes before sunrise. Regarded as the most auspicious time for meditation, prayer, yoga, and study.
- Abhijit Muhurta โ A powerful 48-minute window near solar noon, considered universally auspicious for most activities.
- Hora โ Each day and night is divided into 24 Horas of approximately 60 minutes, each ruled by a planet. Planetary Horas influence the nature of activities best suited to each period.
